Dr. Murphree’s research group was one of two groups to clone the retinolbastoma gene, the first human cancer gene to be identified. He developed the international classification system for grouping intraocular retinoblastoma that is now in general use. Dr. Murphree holds several patents. One of his inventions, the RetCam®, is a digital hand-held wide-angle retinal imaging system currently used in neonatal intensive care units and in operating rooms around the world for the diagnosis and documentation of both retinopathy of prematurity and retinoblastoma. His current research focuses on improved methods to develop therapy for intraocular tumors directly to the eye. Dr. Murphree currently limits his practice to choroidal melanomas in adults and retinoblastoma in children. He consults internationally on issues of ocular oncology.
