In recent years the USC Department of Ophthalmology and the Doheny Eye Institute has been ranked in the top 10 ophthalmology programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report and Ophthalmology Times. The new Doheny Retina Institute was established to emphasize clinical research and to speed the process of moving research findings to clinical care. The Retina Institute team has a record of success with the innovative “retina chip” designed to restore sight to patients with blinding retinal disorders. In 2001, the department moved up to sixth in the country in rankings of eye institutes and eye departments receiving research funding from the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health.
