Glaucoma
The Glaucoma Service at Doheny offers a complete spectrum of consultative,
diagnostic, medical and surgical services. Faculty members are involved
in an NEI sponsored, multicenter clinical trial studying the efficacy
and safety of early surgery in the treatment of glaucoma.
Some of the more common patient referral diagnoses for glaucoma cases
include primary open angle glaucoma, chronic angle-closure glaucoma,
congenital glaucoma and other complicated glaucomas.

Vikas Chopra, MD
After obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, Dr. Chopra completed a research fellowship in molecular biology at the Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope. Dr. Chopra earned his medical degree from Pennsylvania State University where he also completed an internship in Internal Medicine. He then completed a residency in ophthalmology at the Kresge Eye Institute, Wayne State University's Detroit Medical Center. After advanced training in refractive surgery at Beitman Laser Eye Institute, Dr. Chopra returned to Kresge Eye Institute, Wayne State University for a glaucoma fellowship. Dr. Chopra's clinical interests include current techniques for glaucoma surgery, the use of Optical Coherence Tomography, and refractive surgery procedures.

Brian A. Francis,
MD
Dr. Francis earned an M.D. from Tulane University School of Medicine
in New Orleans, Louisiana. He completed his ophthalmology residency
at Tulane. He completed his fellowship training in glaucoma at
the University of California San Francisco. He served as Assistant
Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Glaucoma Services at
Tulane University Department of Ophthalmology before joining the
faculty at USC, Doheny Eye Institute. |

Rohit Varma, MD, MPH
Dr. Varma earned an M.D. from the University of Delhi, India. He completed his residency at the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute, JohnsHopkins Hospital and glaucoma fellowships at the Wills Eye Hospital and at the Doheny Eye Institute, University of Southern California. Dr. Varma is Professor of Ophthalmology and Preventive Medicine, and Director of the Glaucoma Service and Ocular Epidemiology Center at the USC Keck School of Medicine. His primary research focuses on epidemiologic studies of eye disease in the children and aging populations. He is an expert on changes in the optic nerve in glaucoma
and is also studying new imaging techniques in the early diagnosis of glaucomatous optic nerve damage.
