Myths and Meanings: Adult Stem Cell Research
One of the great frontiers of research in the quest to improve eye health involves stem cells. It’s exciting, but the terms are often confusing, and even controversial. Because I see this research as a vital avenue for our patients, I want to use this space to explain precisely how we conduct this research at Doheny Eye Institute, using only adult stem cells, not embryonic stem cells.

Streamlining Screening is Next Big Advance
As the incidence of diabetes rises worldwide, we in eye care see ever increasing rates of retinal disease. This is disheartening and challenging, as diabetic retinopathy is usually asymptomatic until it’s pretty far along.

Land of the Blue Sky
Today, we are finally on our way thanks to travel funding provided by Virtue Foundation, embarking on an 18-hour journey to Beijing and then to Ulaanbaatar.
Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology
Later today I’ll fly to the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) annual conference in Taipei, Taiwan. I make the trip because I like to hear first-hand about the challenges and concerns our colleagues are facing in that region and to advance our collaborations across the region.
Welcome to Ulaanbaatar
We met with representatives from the ophthalmology service (which I can’t help but mention is run primarily by women!) and got started right away seeing patients. We saw over 50 pre-screened patients that our Mongolian colleagues had specially selected for our evaluation.
First Corneal Transplant at First Hospital
Two of my great loves are eye surgery and teaching. While I do both of these at home in Los Angeles, there is something uniquely fulfilling about teaching eye surgery in a foreign country. When I teach corneal transplantation in other countries, I become acutely aware of how incredibly fortunate I am to live in a time and place that makes my job as a corneal transplant surgeon possible.
The Butterfly Effect
Now that we have completed our surgeries and started training the Mongolian surgeons in cornea transplant techniques, it is time for an important part of our mission: teaching the Mongolian surgeons about corneal disease, in the classroom and in the practice lab.
Farewell Mongolia
Each time I do this, I ask myself why I volunteer for this stress, as if my day job back home isn’t already packed with challenging cases. But then I think about corneal blindness worldwide and see the eager faces of the doctors who desperately want to provide a surgical option to their patients.
Genius by Committee
In my three years as a member of the program committee for the retina section of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, I’ve found the conventional wisdom that committee work kills inspired ideas seriously errant. I loved the work on behalf of ARVO, and as my term draws to a close, I’d like to reflect for a moment on what I found profoundly meaningful in the work — not just for me — but for science.
Remembering Richard L. Kasper, 1919-2016

In India, Talks About Diabetic Retinopathy Echo Internationally
Diabetes is epidemic in India, and soon, the country will be home to the largest diabetic population in the world. The concomitant increase in cases of diabetic retinopathy is alarming, making it one of the leading causes of blindness in the country. It seems that soon, the US will face similar issues. Globally, the implications for our work are enormous.
