Doheny Eye Institute Specialized Microscopy Core Facility

The Specialized Microscopy Core facility operates under the direction of Dr. David Hinton and is supervised by Ernesto Barron and Anthony Rodriguez. It is located in a 2,100-square-foot, shared-use facility within the Doheny Vision Research Center (DVRC) Room 214.

Current services offered by the Specialized Microscopy Core module include specimen preparation and training in the operation of:

  1. Laser scanning confocal microscope
  2. Multiphoton laser scanning confocal microscope
  3. Transmission electron microscope (TEM)
  4. Scanning electron microscope (SEM)
  5. Laser microdissection and microcapture for gene expression or protein analysis
  6. Digital photomicroscope and photomicrography techniques
  7. Live cell imaging and preparation techniques
  8. Fluorescence microscopy and quantitation of immunocytochemical procedures
  9. Thin sectioning techniques (ultramicrotome available)
  10. Cryosectioning techniques
  11. Paraffin techniques
  12. Embedding procedures for electron microscopy and for cryo- and paraffin sectioning
  13. Computer-aided graphics
  14. Other equipment located in the facility includes a sputter coater for SEM, two fluorescence and bright field dissecting microscopes, 2 tissue cryostats, a tissue chopper, a tissue vibratome, several computer workstations, a high resolution scanner and numerous color inkjet and laser printers. A cell culture suite complete with hood and incubator are available for live cell imaging preparation.
